| Daryle Singletary Included In Mural Painted On The United Way Building In Dothan Alabama | ||||
Nashville, TN - October 15, 2009 The streets of downtown Dothan were vibrant Wednesday morning as several local musicians performed at the dedication ceremony for Dothan’s 21st mural. Don Fabiani, the chairman of the Wiregrass Festival of Murals, said the dedication ceremony, was open to the public, and held at 11 a.m. at the Wiregrass United Way building located at 308 N. Foster St. The mural pays tribute to 16 country music performers with a connection to the Wiregrass region. According to a statement from the city of Dothan, those musicians include Daryle Singletary, Hank Williams, Hank Williams Jr., Audrey Williams, Dixie Hatfield, Don Helms, Lamar Morris, Curly Chalker, George Jones, Lew Childree, Stonewall Jackson, Jimmy Watford, Billy Dean, Charlie Monk, Boudreaux Bryant and Ray Kirkland. “It’s about the history of the Wiregrass area, and Dothan happens to be what we call the hub of the Wiregrass,” Fabiani said. “Music has been a big part of the development of the Wiregrass area.” Fabiani said the musician’s connection to the Wiregrass has to be within a 100-mile radius of Dothan, which he said stretches through 40 counties and into the states of Florida, Georgia and Alabama. He called the country music mural the second of a three-part musician series. He said each of the murals cost between $25,000 to $75,000. Wes Hardin, the mural’s artist, said the mural today has taken about 180 hours to complete. Hardin described the country music mural as different when compared to the others that line the brick walls of downtown Dothan. Hardin said the mural’s shady location helped cut about 50 hours off the normal time to complete one of the murals. He said because the mural will often be in the shade, it did not require thick coats of paint. “It’s one of the few locations that’s not in the sun,” Hardin said. “My goal is to make each one different.” Daryle Singletary said; " I am very honored to have been chosen as one of the country music performers to be included in the mural. I would like to personally thank Don Fabiani, Wes Hardin and all the folks involved in the project. The mural looks awesome." If you are traveling to or near Dothan, stop by to have a viewing of the mural, 308 N. Foster St. |
